The meteoric success of 2CELLOS started when Croatians Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, former cello rivals, joined forces. In January 2011 they uploaded their unique cello version of Michael Jackson’s ‘Smooth Criminal’ onto YouTube. Within weeks the video became a viral sensation, receiving over five million views. This lead to a record deal with Sony Masterworks, and an invitation to join Elton John on tour.
The debut album by 2CELLOS reached number two in the Classical Crossover charts, and they have appeared on major television shows including Ellen Show and The Tonight Show. Most notably, they were special guests on the hit TV show Glee – the first time an instrumental duo had appeared in the coveted guest spot.
Luca and Stjepan are successful classical musicians who completed their studies in 2011, Luka at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was the recipient of the Elton John scholarship, and Stjepan at the Royal Northern College of Music. Both musicians have won international prizes and performed around the world. Stjepan, the last pupil of Mstislav Rostropovich, won first prize in 21 national and international competitions, Luka’s prizes include the top honours at the VII Lutoslawski International Cello Competition in Warsaw.
