From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Let’s Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women!
16 Days of Action For The Elimination of Violence Against Women runs from the 25th November (International Elimination of Violence Against Women Day) to the 10th December (International Human Rights Day) when organisations worldwide have an opportunity and platform to raise awareness of violence against women and highlight their work.
This year, Eliminate Domestic Violence (EDV) Global Foundation, Peace One Day and many of EDV’s partners, including British Airways, the Corporate Alliance, Public Health England, the Wellbeing Foundation, UN Women and others are participating in 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, helping to raise international awareness of violence against women and girls (VAWG).
The global theme for this year’s campaign is 'From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World’. We recognise that we can’t achieve peace in the world if there is conflict in the home. For many women sadly the home is not the peaceful place where their wellbeing will be taken care of; instead it is the place where they are most likely to experience hurt, harm or danger.
The focus for this year's 16 Days will bring together women, private & public sector organisations, NGOs, peace and human rights movements to challenge violence against women and miltarism which allow violence and discrimination to continue. The use of force, coercion and sexual violence in countries where there is armed conflict disproportionately affects women and girls, who are especially vulnerable because of their age and gender. We know that in many countries rape is used as a weapon of war. Rape and sexual abuse are not just a by-product of war but are used, shockingly, as a military strategy.
It will take all of us to challenge violence against women, take action & truly change the paradigm.
